The Downpatrick Unit C.B.S.I. (Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland) was founded in 1963 by Fr. Joseph Magee. For the first couple of years the unit used a local school hall. Under the guidance of Fr. Magee a new scout hall was built withvoluntary help and opened in 1965.
Scouting is about developing healthy, confident, young people who are mindful of the needs and concerns of others, forward in offering help, and appreciative of the world about them. Participants develop values and interests which they treasure throughpout their lives and which help inform how they live.
Overall, the Scouting Ireland group does a lot of cross-community work and it have worked at times closely with the Boy’s Brigade. In the past the Downpatrick Group has been represented at many of the regional, national and international events and has hosted scout troops from Japan, Holland and America.
